American Jewish World Service
July 13, 2008

- Website: http://www.ajws.org/
- American Jewish World Service (AJWS) was established in 1985, with the goal of “empowering people throughout the world to achieve justice and self-sufficiency through the promotion of human rights, education, economic development, healthcare and sustainable agriculture.” Ruth Messinger serves as president of the organization.
- AJWS promotes human rights and dignity throughout the world on the basis of Judaism's "broad, deep, and detailed tradition of social justice and social responsibility", and believes that Jews have a particular obligation to fight against genocide.
- AJWS operates in Central and South America, working on rural development and poverty projects; Africa, focusing on economic development and fighting the spread of HIV/AIDS; and Asia, assisting displaced persons and rebuilding communities destroyed in the 2004 tsunami.
- Although the organization is not active in the Israeli-Arab conflict, they provided grants to Hadassah Medical Organization’s Mount Scopus Hospital (2002-3) and to Makassed Hospital in East Jerusalem (2001-2).
- According to AJWS’s 2005 Annual Report (the most recent available), the organization receives the bulk of its financing from individual donors, foundations and federations in America.
- NGO Monitor found no evidence of political statements by AJWS officials or in organization publications.
