Guardian Op-ed: Blair must work to help Vanunu, an Amnesty International ‘prisoner of conscience’
,

The Guardian Newspaper features an op-ed calling on Tony Blair to work to free newly-arrested 'nuclear whistle-blower’ Mordechai Vanunu. The article notes that "Amnesty International has made him a prisoner of conscience." Vanunu was jailed for 6 months last Monday after violating his parole agreement by speaking to foreigners and visiting Bethlehem (according to the article).

" ´Human Rights´ and Wrongs "
,

... Judging by the audience´s reaction to the films, it seemed that many in attendance were also failing to make the sorts of difficult distinctions necessary in human-rights advocacy--namely, which wrongs are more wrong than others. During the Q-and-A period following "Banished," an audience member praised the film as a universal--rather than American--story, arguing that what´s going on in Israel and Palestine is exactly the same as African-Americans pushing for the return of their land. The majority of those in the room applauded his analysis.

"We Don´t Pick on Israel"
,

In his June 25 op-ed, "A Shadow on the Human Rights Movement," Jackson Diehl mischaracterized Human Rights Watch´s position regarding the U.N. Human Rights Council. We have repeatedly criticized the council´s selective treatment of Israel, including in a statement last week. While we stand by that criticism, we also believe that more can be done for human rights by working to improve the council than by writing it off.

"Time to scrutinize ´Cordaid´"
,

"In 2001 the Dutch Roman Catholic NGO Cordaid was indirectly involved in financing the largest anti-Israeli and anti-Jewish hate campaign of the twenty-first century, the UN World Conference against Racism in Durban, South Africa. This supposedly humanitarian, but heavily politicized pressure group is subsidized by its country´s government and recently again undertook an anti-Israeli campaign. "

"A Shadow on the Human Rights Movement"
,

"Where does the global human rights movement stand in the seventh year of the 21st century? If the first year of the United Nations Human Rights Council is any indication, it´s grown sick and cynical -- partly because of the fecklessness and flexible morality of some of the very governments and groups that claim to be most committed to democratic values...

"ACRI & Democracy: We can't withdraw yet"
,

"Recently I received an e-mail from the Association for Civil Rights in Israel (ACRI): 'On the 40th anniversary of 1967, the association asks citizens this question: Can the State of Israel, which for 40 years has been ruling over millions of people who are deprived of the basic human rights that are the condition for democracy, still be considered a democratic country?' "

"Waiting Until It´s Safe"
,

"As of Monday morning, the home page of Amnesty International, a group dedicated to "internationally recognized human rights," didn´t mention the Gaza killings. But at noon yesterday, the group posted a statement calling for Hamas and Fatah to "end revenge killings, attacks and abductions." The plight of the Palestinians is referred to in a May 31 report, "Enduring Occupation: Palestinians Under Siege in the West Bank."

The report represents the group´s commemoration of the "40th Anniversary of the Palestinian Territories." Israeli security checkpoints, constructed after a spate of terrorism and murder, are the centerpiece of the Amnesty International report. The open battle in Gaza, however, was missing in action."

"Watching the watchdog"
,

As Amnesty releases its annual report on human rights for 2006, amid highly choreographed public relations events and repeating the familiar condemnations of Israel and America, NGO Monitor also has published a report on Amnesty´s activities in the Middle East. The result is not a pretty picture for those clinging to the "halo effect"...

"Britain´s obsessive boycotters"
,

"While Israelis are targeted by rockets from Gaza and officials from the "elected Palestinian government" threaten attacks by female suicide bombers, calls for anti-Israeli boycotts based on human rights claims would appear to be both immoral and absurd. But the small group that controls Britain´s trade unions has managed to combine both traits, and it is escalating its political warfare in parallel with Palestinian violence. A vote on yet another anti-Israel boycott proposal is scheduled to take place at the end of May, this time by the Universities and Colleges Union (UCU)......They will continue to use terms such as "apartheid" and "racist" to demonize Israel. As made clear in recent statements, it is Israel´s existence that they reject, and not specific policies"

"Scrutinize Amnesty International"
,

For many journalists, diplomats, and political activists, Amnesty International is considered to be a highly reliable and objective source of information and analysis on human rights around the world. But the halo that surrounds its reports and campaigns is beginning to fray, as the evidence of political bias and inaccuracy mounts...
