NGOs and Durban Demonization at UN Human Rights Review of Israel
As predicted by NGO Monitor, the majority of NGO submissions to the UN's UPR of Israel ignore human rights issues facing Israelis and areas where Israel is a leader in this field, while grossly distorting the humanitarian, human rights and international legal dimensions of the Arab-Israeli conflict. Nord-Sud XXI, Ittijah, Badil, and PGAAWC exploit human rights terminology and employ inflammatory rhetoric against Israel. Adalah, Amnesty, and others attribute "racist" motives to Israeli policies, instead of acknowledging that these are legitimate responses to Palestinian violence against Israeli civilians.

HRW Hires Another pro-Palestinian Activist
The addition of Nadia Barhoum, a pro-Palestinian campus activist, to HRWs Middle East and North Africa Division, increases the political bias reflected in the activities and backgrounds of Sarah Leah Whitson, Joe Stork, and previous staff. This is inconsistent with HRWs claimed "even-handedness and accuracy." Barhoum was an active member in Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) at the University of California, Berkeley. SJP promotes the Durban agenda of demonization of Israel, divestment from Israel, and uses terms such as "apartheid" and "mass atrocities" in reference to Israel.

Durban Review PrepCom: Will NGOs Lead a Repeat of the 2001 Catastrophe?
A Durban Review Conference preparatory meeting was held in Geneva on Oct. 6-17. NGO participation was divided, with some opposing a repetition of the antisemitism of the 2001 conference. Other NGOs pressed the anti-Israel and anti-Western agenda of the "Durban strategy." BADIL and MRAP condemned Israel. Unofficial meetings of NGO representatives about a potential NGO Forum included antisemitic and anti-Israel attacks against Jewish representatives.

NGO Monitor submission to the Winograd Commission
The Winograd Commission (officially "הוועדה לבדיקה ארועי המערכה בלבנון 2006") was appointed by the Israeli government to investigate and draw lessons from the 2006 Second Lebanon War. NGO Monitors submission analyses the reporting of human rights NGOs during the conflict, and discusses these groups exploitation of human rights rhetoric and international law to promote a politicized anti-Israel agenda. Among other recommendations, we suggest that the Committee independently verify all NGO claims before considering them as evidence of human rights violations.

NGO Monitors Submission to the 2009 Durban Conference Preparatory Meeting
As NGO Monitor has reported, the UN will be convening a 2009 follow-up to the 2001 Durban Conference. The Preparatory Committee for the 2009 conference is holding its organizational review session from August 27-31, 2007, in Geneva. The meetings will be chaired by Libya and other members of the committee include Iran, Cuba, Russia, and South Africa. A number of international and Palestinian NGOs are also expected to participate. Many radical Palestinian NGOs such as PNGO and LAW played an active role in the preparatory meetings in Tehran leading up to the 2001 Durban Conference and were largely responsible for shaping the anti-Israel and antisemitic agenda of the NGO Forum at Durban. In advance of the session, the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights has invited NGOs to contribute reviews and written recommendations. To that end, NGO Monitor has prepared a submission detailing the role of NGOs at the 2001 Durban Conference, the adoption and subsequent promotion of the Durban Strategy in NGO campaigning, and offering recommendations to prevent a repetition of these events in 2009.

HRW/FIDH/OMCT statement on NGO official linked to PFLP
On May 2 2007, three major NGOs -- Human Rights Watch, FIDHand the World Organization Against Torture (OMCT) -- published a joint press release calling on Israel to lift the travel ban placed on Shawan Jabarin, the General Director of Al-Haq. The statement alleges that Jabarin was barred by Israel from attending the annual Congress of the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) in Lisbon on April 19, 2007, and that "Israeli authorities have not explained why the restrictions are in place". NGO Monitors analysis of this statement shows these NGOs entirely erase Jarabins links to the PFLP and the legitimate security concerns. The result is a selective research and ideologically biased analysis, similar to others analyzed in previous NGO Monitor reports.
