Since March 30, 2018, Hamas and other Palestinian terror groups have organized violent confrontations along Gaza’s border with Israel under the label of the “March of Return.” The riots consisted of an organized armed attack on the Israeli border and IDF positions, attempts to destroy and breach the border fence, and sustained arson, rocket, and mortar attacks on Israeli civilian communities.
On November 22, 2018, B'Tselem published a report that utilized a flawed methodology, minimized the context of violence and terror, belittled the human rights of Israeli civilians living in close proximity to the border, and ignored Hamas and other Palestinian terror groups’ incitement to violence against Israel.
NGO Monitor submitted the following information to the United Nations Human Rights Council for its Commission of Inquiry on the 2018 protests on the Gaza border.
NGO Monitor delivered a submission to the UN Commission of Inquiry (COI) on the protests and violence along the Gaza-Israel border beginning in March 2018.
Most NGOs and NGO officials have completely ignored the over 400 rockets and missiles fired at Israel. The few that have commented have exclusively focused on demonizing Israel.
On July 25, 2018, the UN Human Rights Council appointed three individuals to serve as members of a Commission of Inquiry (COI) into what has been predetermined to be Israel’s “military assaults on the large-scale civilian protests” along the Gaza border.
At the 390th meeting of the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian on July 23, 2018, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein made many highly biased statements echoing the offensive language and false claims of politicized NGOs.
The 38th Session of the UN Human Rights Council (June 18 – July 6, 2018) continued the bias and hypocrisy that has come to define the UN in general and the UNHRC in particular. NGO Monitor staff was present, speaking before the Council and documenting the numerous false accusations from member states and NGOs.
On June 28, 2018, The Daily Telegraph (Australia) ran an exclusive article on how the Australian government will audit “taxpayer funds [that] are being funnelled to a Palestinian aid organisation that has employed and supported a leader of a terrorist group in Gaza.”
On June 13, 2018, Human Rights Watch (HRW) issued a press statement accusing Israel of “apparent war crimes in Gaza” during the weekly Hamas-orchestrated violence along the border.
Becca Wertman discusses how Human Rights Watch (HRW) releases a report ignoring criticial aspects of the Gaza riots, including the threat that Hamas and other terrorist factions pose to both Palestinian and Israeli civilians and does not mention the recruitment and use of children as soldiers.
