Op-eds

´Captives without Human Rights´ [Translation from Hebrew]
,

´The abduction of soldiers, refusing to allow visits of the International Red Cross, ......
withholding knowledge of their health are among the worst crimes perpetrated by the terror organizations. One would expect the human rights organizations, who condemn Israel for every crime, real or imaginary, to raise a voice against this crime and against the continuing cruelty to the familiesof the hostages. .....Those who raise a voice against every human rights violation have yet to let out more than a faint murmur of a quarter of a protest...

"For State Department, reliance on NGOs saps report's credibility"
,

The lack of credibility and professionalism in the chapter on Israel of the U.S. State Department's latest human rights report seriously undermines the credibility of the entire document, Gerald Steinberg writes. ...The main reason is the almost total reliance on allegations made by the large number of non-governmental organizations active in this conflict zone. Instead of doing their own research on these complex human rights issues, the authors of this report in the U.S. Consulate in Jerusalem (on the Palestinians) and in the U.S. Embassy in Tel Aviv (on Israeli actions) parrot the claims of highly political NGOs. Groups such as Adalah, Mossawa, HaMoked, B'Tselem, the Public Committee Against Torture in Israel (PCATI), and Human Rights Watch are the real authors of this chapter. With the exception of HRW, these NGOs are funded by European governments, radical church groups and similar donors...

"Many rights, some wrong"

The world´s biggest human-rights organisation stretches its brand. AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL is the biggest human-rights organisation in the world, with 70 national chapters and 1.8m-plus members. Its battle honours glitter. It has defended moral giants among prisoners of conscience such as Vaclav Havel and Andrei Sakharov...

"Watching the Watchers, Part Two"
,

Human Rights Watch is a powerful nongovernmental organization, whose reports, press releases, and submissions to the United Nations carry a great deal of weight. In the 1970s, HRW made its mark by leading campaigns to free political prisoners in the Soviet Union and elsewhere. But after the Cold War, this organization, which has an annual budget of over $50 million, seems to have lost its way. Its strident reports and condemnations of America and Israel have led to growing criticism, including questions regarding the accuracy of HRW´s reports, and the use of human rights rhetoric to pursue a radical political agenda aimed at democracies...

"Reining in CIDA’s radicals"
,

While Canadian foreign policy has moved away from simplistic slogans and political correctness, some officials have not gotten the word. In particularly, the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) continues to run its own foreign policy, which is at odds with the goals and objectives proclaimed by Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

"Manipulating ´civil society´ "
,

"When foreign governments team up with and provide financial support to private Israeli groups in order to oppose policies chosen by democratically elected leaders, this is a problem. It is also a violation of sovereignty, and a clear example of neocolonialism. Nevertheless, the recent discovery that the British Embassy in Tel Aviv is funding an Israeli non-governmental organization (NGO) known as "Bimkom - Planners for Planning Rights" - is not surprising...

"Yes, we proudly support Mossawa"
,

"The New Israel Fund was attacked in this newspaper by Lori Lowenthal Marcus of the Zionist Organization of America for funding Mossawa, an Israeli Arab organization that participated in preparing the Future Vision paper issued last December ("Not with my money," February 14)....As our long-time supporters know, the New Israel Fund has been funding, supporting and training Israeli civil society organizations for 27 years. We support groups that advocate for human and civil rights; social justice and economic equity; religious pluralism; and the environment. We also have always been crystal-clear in our support for a Jewish and democratic state, which we are convinced is imperative for Israeli security. In our view, both Jewish and democratic values require that Israel's political and economic elites listen to the disempowered voices of Israeli society..."

"Sharansky on Amnesty and Human Rights Watch"
,

"Human rights groups, such as Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, which are heavily nourished by Jewish values, passion and funding, must stop squeezing both sides of the genocidal pincer.
These groups must be challenged, on the one hand, to press for enforcement of the Genocide Treaty, to stand up for human rights in Iran, and to oppose and expose Iranian support for terrorism. On the other, they must stop perverting the sacred cause of human rights into a cudgel in Iran´s hands against Israel. This happened just months ago when, during the Lebanon war, such groups all but ignored Hizbullah´s terrorism from behind human shields and called Israel´s self-defense a "war crime." "

"Not with my money"
,

"The New Israel Fund is a non-profit organization which focuses on eliminating any special role for religion in either Israeli society or government. NIF grants reflect that orientation. One of the largest grants the NIF gave in the latest year for which information is available was to an organization it co-founded: the Mossawa Center. An NIF document states that organization's belief that efforts should be expended to prevent efforts to "judaize the Galilee and Negev." In other words, there is no part of Israel the NIF thinks should be, or remain, officially "judaized." More than 33 percent of NIF grants go to programs that exclusively serve Arab Israelis, and fully 40 percent of Shatil, NIF's "empowerment center" money is used for assistance to Israel's Arab minority. Those programs actively promote the erasure of any special status for Jews in Israel. ....the Jewish Agency is in the NIF highest-donor category, the one for those giving more than $100,000. The Joint shows up in the donor category of $25,000 to $50,000, as do the Jewish Federation of Grand Rapids, Michigan, and the Jewish Women's Foundation of Metropolitan Chicago."

"Human Rights and Wrongs"
,

"What are the greatest human rights concerns in the world today? If you listen to the international human rights movement, and their college-campus allies, such as Amnesty International and the National Lawyer's Guild, you would think that the death penalty in the United States, Israel's efforts to defeat Palestinian terrorists and the detention camp at Guantanamo Bay constituted the worst of the world's atrocities. This set of priorities displays a curious blindness towards true human rights abuses and an unfortunate political bias. All too often, the human rights lobby sets its goals based on its own political desires rather than on the needs of victims."
