Campaigns of Demonization
As part of the “Durban Strategy” to isolate Israel, NGOs level accusations of systematic Israeli violations of Palestinian human rights. The NGO allegations are characterized by factual and legal distortions, in pursuit of an anti-human rights agenda.
On July 27, 2021, Human Rights Watch (HRW) published a report alleging that Israel committed war crimes in its May 2021 conflict with Hamas and Islamic Jihad in Gaza. This report serves as another vehicle for HRW’s ongoing campaign lobbying the International Criminal Court.

In the past 18-months, at least 15 political NGOs involved in anti-Israel advocacy, as well as their UN allies, have issued publications accusing Israel of “apartheid.” This offensive term is used to advance a narrative of unparalleled Israeli immorality, and to promote demonization through BDS and lawfare, including in the International Criminal Court (ICC).

On Tuesday, February 23, Al-Haq and Forensic Architecture released a publication and video (“The Extrajudicial Execution of Ahmad Erekat”) alleging that Israeli forces acted unlawfully in shooting Ahmed Erekat when he rammed his car into a soldier at a checkpoint on the outskirts of Jerusalem.

While Israel has conducted a massive drive to vaccinate its population against the COVID-19 virus, numerous non-governmental organizations (NGOs) have launched a specious and libelous campaign, claiming that Israel has failed to discharge its legal responsibility to provide vaccinations to Palestinians.

Since the founding of Black Lives Matter in 2013, a number of political NGOs have sought to connect this cause with anti-Israel campaigns. Several prominent pro-BDS organizations, as well as Palestinian NGOs, are leading this effort. These NGOs are attempting to leverage tensions in order to promote Palestinian solidarity and portray Israel as a main violator of civil rights.
Save the Children and Watchlist on Children and Armed Conflict again published reports as part of the ongoing political campaigns to demonize Israel and have Israel included on a UN blacklist of “grave” violators of children’s rights. In the process, neither NGO applies the accepted UN definitions of what constitutes such violations, and the reports reflect major methodological shortcomings.

These include Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP).
